Governors discuss energy efficiency in Governors' meeting

20 KS1 KS2 KS3
As decision makers, governors have an important role to play when schools are committed to cutting their carbon emissions and reducing their energy use.    Many schools and Multi Academy Trusts now have a Sustainability Governor in post and the National Governance Association has published support, resources and guidance on addressing sustainability in your school.

Developing a Policy

Developing a policy commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction has to come from the top and should be backed up by a mission statement and energy policy.

School Governors should look to develop a policy which:

• Makes a clear statement of commitment
• Specifies clear objectives and targets for energy consumption
• Identifies responsibilities and resources
• Provides an action plan and states how it will be achieved
• Sets out the review timeframe.

The Governors should review the policy periodically and report savings and areas for improvement.
