There can be large variations in the electricity used by classroom touchscreen displays, both when operating and when left on standby. In some schools we have visited, screens use around 50 W of electricity in standby mode.
If left on standby overnight, at weekends, and during holidays, this can amount to around 350 kWh of electricity per year. At an electricity cost of £0.30 per kWh, this would cost around £100 per screen each year and produce over 60 kg of CO₂ emissions.
Where possible, screens should be fully powered down at the end of each school day, rather than left on standby.
In some schools, screens can be centrally managed to switch off automatically outside school hours, although this may require additional setup or investment.
Ensure that:
- Teachers know how to fully power down screens, not just leave them on standby.
- Responsibility is assigned (for example to the last teacher using the room, pupils or site staff) to check that screens are switched off at the end of the day.
