Run a Layer Up Power Down Day

Bilton C of E Junior School, Friday, 21 November 2025
30 points 450 pupils Change-maker KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4, KS5

We decided to hold a Power down, layer up day in November as our attempt last year wasn't as successful due to a warm spell!
We spoke to the whole school on Monday during assembly about what we were doing and why - explaining about wasting heat by leaving doors and windows open during the day too.
Some parents were very concerned about the school turning the heat down low as Friday was forecast to be very cold and so we decided to reduce the heat by a couple of degrees and focus on keeping the heat we were paying for, inside the school.  We found that with a few reminders (and posters on doors to catch people's eyes), doors were kept closed more during the day - especially at breaktimes.
Next week, we will look at the gas data to look at the impact of reducing our heating a bit.

Activity description

Take charge of the heating at your school by running a Layer Up Power Down Day.

Many schools spend a large proportion of their heating energy warming the school to an excessive temperature or when its empty.

We're hoping that by encouraging schools turn their heating off or down on one day - ideally a Friday or Monday plus the closest weekend - we can raise awareness of how much energy schools are wasting by keeping their heating too high or when schools are closed - especially at the weekends and over holidays.

Download our poster (or create your own), tell your whole school community, and get ready to layer up.

Don't forget to look at your heating data the following week to spot how much difference your action has made.
