Understanding how our transport choices impact the environment

We’ve been learning how the way we travel can have a big impact on the planet. 🚗🌍🚶‍♀️

What did we do?
As part of our learning, we took part in the Big Walk and Wheel challenge! For two weeks, we encouraged everyone to walk, scoot, or cycle to school as often as possible. Classes kept track of how many people used active travel instead of the car. It was exciting to see the numbers go up and to celebrate the effort everyone made.

We also did some travel surveys to find out how children usually get to school. We talked about how using cars every day can create pollution and how choosing to walk, scoot, or ride a bike is better for the environment—and for our health!

What did we learn?
We learned that small changes, like leaving the car at home just a few days a week, can make a big difference. Active travel helps keep our air cleaner, reduces traffic near school, and keeps us fit and healthy. We also realised that events like the Big Walk and Wheel help build good habits.

What could we do next?
We’d love to keep the momentum going! Next, we could plan a Walk to School Week, set up a Park and Stride zone, or even create a Travel Tracker in school. We could also make posters and share announcements to keep reminding everyone about the benefits of active travel—and how we’re helping the planet, one step at a time!
