As part of ongoing improvements to the school’s energy efficiency, we installed lighting with occupancy (PIR) sensors in an older part of the school building that has recently been refurbished.
During the refurbishment, all rooms in this area—including classrooms, corridors, and shared spaces—were fitted with PIR sensors. These sensors automatically turn lights on when movement is detected and switch them off when the room is unoccupied.
This upgrade replaced manual lighting controls, helping to ensure that lights are not left on unnecessarily, particularly in areas that may be used intermittently throughout the day.
We found that automatic lighting controls are an effective way to reduce energy waste without relying solely on staff or pupils remembering to switch lights off.
The installation has already helped improve consistency in energy-saving behaviours, particularly in quieter or less frequently used spaces. It also supports a more sustainable school environment by reducing overall electricity consumption.
