As part of our commitment to reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainability, we delivered a whole-school assembly focused on saving energy. Pupils learned why reducing energy use is important for protecting the environment, lowering carbon emissions and helping the school reduce unnecessary costs.
The assembly explored simple actions that everyone can take each day, such as switching off lights and interactive whiteboards when they are not needed, closing doors and windows when heating or cooling systems are in use, and ensuring computers and other equipment are turned off at the end of the day. Pupils were encouraged to think about how these small changes can make a significant difference when everyone works together.
The assembly prompted discussions within classrooms about how pupils could become more responsible for saving energy both at school and at home. Children shared ideas and made personal pledges about the actions they would take to reduce energy waste.
To build on this work, we plan to continue regular energy awareness assemblies, monitor energy use across the school, involve the Conservation Leaders in promoting good energy-saving habits and celebrate classes that demonstrate positive environmental behaviours. We also intend to encourage pupils to share energy-saving tips with their families to help reduce energy use beyond the school gates.
Activity description
Now that you're working the Energy Sparks, run regular energy saving assemblies to remind everyone in the school about the importance of saving energy and your progress towards your energy saving target.

- You might want to show a short part of some of the videos here
- Review the Energy Sparks energy usage charts for your school. Present some of the Energy Sparks charts in an assembly. Explain to pupils what the charts show in terms of the main uses of energy at your school, and ask pupils for ideas of how you could save energy. Use the assembly to present an action plan to reduce energy use. Present a follow-up assembly after a month to present Energy Sparks charts showing the change since the last assembly, and discuss further ways you could reduce energy use.
- Present some of the data you have collected at your own school, through your monitoring campaigns, for example:
- Carry out a spot check to see if lights or electrical items are left on at lunch time
- Measure classroom temperatures
- Monitor whether outside doors and windows are closed during cold weather.
- Draw your own charts to present the data, and then present an assembly to tell your audience about what your results mean, and what the school could do next to reduce its energy use.
- Use assemblies to introduce new energy policies to the rest of the school, for example:
- Introduce a policy on classroom temperature
- Introduce a policy on switching off lights, computers, and other information technology equipment.
- The assembly can be used to share why you are introducing the policy, who is responsible for the actions, how you will monitor how the school is doing and then to report back on whether the policy is making a difference.
