Impact of turning the heating down by 1C

The Problem
Your gas usage over the year of is too high. Other schools of a similar floor area use . If you matched the gas use of these schools you could save per year, and if you matched the best performing schools you could save .

One common cause of this is having your thermostats  turned up too high.  A 1C decrease in temperature on the thermostat leads to about a 10% decrease in gas consumption.

The best temperatures for schools are:
  • Normal classrooms: 18°C
  • Corridors: 15°C
  • Areas with high levels of activity (e.g. sports halls): 15°C
  • Areas with low levels of activity: 21°C
  • Special needs schools or areas with very young children: 21°C

Wootton St Peter's Primary School could save £100 each year if the heating set temperature was reduced by 1C.
