Use appliance monitors to understand the energy use of individual appliances

Appliance monitors let you see the energy that an appliance is using as well as adding up the energy that the appliance uses over a period of time. You can also use the appliance monitor to see how much it has cost to operate the appliance for a certain amount of time. 

Appliance energy monitors can be purchased for about £15 online, or you can ask to borrow some from Energy Sparks by emailing

Use the appliance energy monitor to  test the following appliances around your school:
  1. Fridges and freezers
  2. Kettles
  3. Water chillers
  4. Microwaves
  5. Photocopiers and printers
  6. Plug in heaters if used
  7. Ipad/tablet/laptop charging trolleys
  8. Computers
  9. Any other portable electrical equipment you spot around your school.

Dos and Don'ts

Do use the appliance monitors indoors only.
Do make sure the appliance monitor is securely plugged into the mains socket.
Do make sure the appliance is securely plugged into the output socket. 
Check with an adult before unplugging an appliance.
