Overview

Fridges and freezers can consume up to half a school’s electricity outside of school hours. Not all fridges and freezers need to be left on, particularly in longer holidays, as food in general does not safely keep in fridges for more than a week.

To reduce costs, kitchen staff should be encouraged to clean the fridges and freezers and then turn them off before holidays (especially before the summer holidays.) If frozen food needs to be kept, consolidate it in a single freezer to allow other freezers to be turned off.
