Overview

Gas boilers consume gas which is a fossil fuel and if we are to meet our climate commitments, we will need to replace all our gas boilers within 15 years.

On average, gas boilers currently account for 75% of schools’ carbon emissions. Installing a heat pump will reduce your school’s carbon emissions for heating and hot water by about 80% and more in future years as the grid decarbonises. So if you can make the change, then it will make a big difference to the planet!

However, installing heat pumps can be difficult, particularly at older schools. The main issue is not usually insulation but the distribution of heat.

You can ask for specialised advice from qualified installers listed on the MCS website. Government grants are often published on the SALIX website.
