Every Friday afternoon, we have a school-wide initiative to have lights off during our afternoon reading session, called DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) x Eco. It is advertised in the daily morning briefing (DMB) shown to all students at the start of the school day, so it is as much student-driven as it is staff-driven to remember to shut off lights and allow natural lights to flood our classrooms during this reading session. This initiative also encourages lights off throughout the day, with naturally-lit classrooms that can allow for this. Although there are some set backs - some rooms do not have natural light or it leads to disruptive behaviour, the latter at least can be resolved in the routinisation of this activity.
