After winning our BCP Council's sustainable school award last academic year, we were provided with the award of having our local Sustrans facilitate a bike repair day, where over 180 bikes were seen to by four technicians in a combined 24 hours! This was at the forefront of our first-of-the-year walk and wheel to school week, where cyclists were awarded gifts, provided by Sustrans: bike lights, hi-vis slap bands, hi-vis zipper pulls, bike bells, bike locks, bike bag and a stuffed animal.
Activity description
Let's see how fun a low carbon commute can be. Having an event is a great way for people to try out a more sustainable way of getting to school without having to fully commit. If you hold these events regularly however, they'll see that a low carbon commute is not only better for the planet, it's best for us too!
Here are some ideas to get you started thinking about a theme day:
Hold a breakfast event with free pastries/rolls if you come to school in a low carbon way. Organise a bike or walking bus on the main routes to school and commute to school in a low carbon group. Make some noise! Decorate your bikes and scooters Pair your low carbon commute event with a bike repair, cycling lessons or bike security tagging event. Cover transportation themed activities and games in your lessons Hold an assembly or parade to celebrate all the low carbon commutes Give each low carbon commuter a ticket for a prize draw raffle Run a Lucky Lock event - where a lock is put on on a bike or scooter at random and the owner wins a prize.
