After our soft launch of a switch off at October half term, we decided we wanted to do a more full on shutdown for the Christmas holiday, when less staff would be in. Site staff were able to shut off the gas heating and hot water. This took a few hours to reset the system but definitely worth the time with the savings in cost and gas used. We saved approximately £215/4,430kwh per day. We started a staff campaign to switch off all electrical items, including fridges. We promoted this during Staff Briefing, on the Staff Bulletin on the intranet, by emailing department leads and all support staff directly, and asked for HODs to check departments. We also asked Site Staff to walk round the building and switch off anything that was still on. Unfortunately, the switch for the electric powered heating system in the Sixth Form was down, so when the heating was shut down remotely, it didn't physically shutdown. It was a lesson learnt for us to follow up that anything done remotely has worked. This did effect the electric savings, and due to a connection problem with one of our meters, there is a lag on the data so it is not yet clear how much electricity we saved. Overall, the results were hugely positive but there is still more we can do and more to save next time. We are going to ask HODs to allocate energy shutdown's to a member of their team so they can be sure everything is shutdown in future. Some departments did very little to shutdown, where others did brilliantly. We will feedback to staff once we have the electricity figures. We also plan to roll the shutdowns out to Fridays and eventually everyday.
