Run a Layer Up Power Down Day

Oasis Academy - Putney, Friday, 11 November 2022
30 points Change-maker KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4, KS5

We sent out an email to parents explaining our campaign to parents and asked them to send their children into school with an extra layer on.  We held an energy assembly in advance explaining to pupils the purpose of the day.

The Eco-Team carried out surveys on the day asking children and staff to compare how they were feeling on the Power Down day versus a normal school day (either too cold; just right; too hot).  Analysis of results showed that all staff and the majority of pupils were more comfortable on the power down day than on a usual school day.

The Eco Team are having discussions with the facilities manager about what we can do about changing the temperature of the school going forward.

Activity description

Take charge of the heating at your school by running a Layer Up Power Down Day.

Many schools spend a large proportion of their heating energy warming the school to an excessive temperature or when its empty.

We're hoping that by encouraging schools turn their heating off or down on one day - ideally a Friday or Monday plus the closest weekend - we can raise awareness of how much energy schools are wasting by keeping their heating too high or when schools are closed - especially at the weekends and over holidays.

Download our poster (or create your own), tell your whole school community, and get ready to layer up.

Don't forget to look at your heating data the following week to spot how much difference your action has made.
