Pupils meet with kitchen staff to discuss their role in saving energy

St John's Primary School, Radstock, Thursday, 20 April 2023
10 Communicator KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4, KS5

What you did

A few members of our school council met with Anne, our kitchen manager, and had a tour around our school kitchen. The children discovered that our kitchen staff take sustainability very seriously and always turn lights and appliances off when not in use. The children did, however, discover that our fridge-freezers are very old and may therefore be inefficient. We have therefore asked the headteacher to purchase an energy monitor to determine whether this is the case.

Activity description

School kitchens are a major energy consumption area.

Pupils can interview the kitchen staff to find out how appliances are used in the kitchen and where energy might be saved.
