Children spent time discussing why food waste is bad for the planet: - Producing food uses up natural resources like water and energy. This has an impact on climate change. - Some people go hungry because they do not have enough food. - Wasting food costs us money. - Food waste often ends up in landfill. This is harmful for our planet as is procedures greenhouse gases which are bad for our planet.
Children learnt that even at school there is a lot of food wasted - they looked in the bins. Children learnt that fruit and vegetables are the most important food groups as they provide your body with a lot of very important nutrients. But they are also the type of food that is wasted the most. There was a lot of peas thrown away. Children also learnt that people aren't using the recycling bins correctly.
Children have decided that as a school we need to do more to stop food waste and are going to monitor the food waste and spoke in assembly about this.
Activity description
Did you know that food waste is one of the greatest sources of greenhouse gases?
Or that primary and secondary schools in the UK waste over 80,000 tonnes of food every year (that's the same as 8000 blue whales).
Tackling food waste in your school is a great way to cut your carbon emissions! This linked presentation provides an overview of why food waste is such a huge environmental problem. It can be run either as a one hour activity for an eco club or teachers can use the linked worksheets for 2-3 sessions of class work.
